Substance Use Specialty Disorder
Act 262, which was passed in April 2018, included provisions that impact the scope of service for individuals holding the LPC, LPC-temporary, PCTL, MFT-TL, LMFT, and LMFT-temporary credentials. In particular, these individuals are now able to provide treatment for Substance Use Disorders consistent with the scope of service that their training, experience, and supervision support. LCSW and LCSW-temporary credential holders already had this ability even before Act 262.
It is no longer necessary, from a licensing perspective, for any of these individuals to hold a substance use disorder specialty to provide this service. As a result, DSPS has updated policies to reflect that substance use disorder specialties will no longer be granted to these individuals, as it would be redundant. There may be other regulations that impact the provision of Substance Abuse treatment in various settings.
